Frequently Asked Questions
What is the timeline for this initiative?
The Middle Grades Redesign began in 2015 at the request of the Board of Education Curriculum Committee to provide more access to language learning for all students. The work began with a two year design thinking process to better understand the students as users, find themes throughout the district, and codify the design principles for a redesign. Community feedback was gathered in the Spring of 2018 and analyzed to revise the initial model. Two schools, Francisco and Roosevelt, will pilot the redesign model for the 2019-2020 school year. All other comprehensive middle schools and K-8s are developing their capacity in Deeper Learning Experiences, yet a clear timeline for model rollout is yet to be confirmed.
Will my student have the same amount of instructional time?
The state of California requires 54,000 instructional minutes each year. In the redesign model students will have 61,920 instructional minutes each year.
What programs are available for my child on the early release day?
All middle schools have Beacon programs and many students are already accessing the after school program. Reach out to your site director if you think you will have a new need for after school support in a model with early release.
